This skill will require you to place EKG leads, record the EKG for anesthetized patients and recognize when an EKG is abnormal. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to use an EKG machine, translate the results and recognize both normal and abnormal waveforms.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
A video of the student placing the EKG leads on a patient
Make sure the patient is in the proper recumbency, preferably right lateral.
Make sure you have the correct lead on the correct leg in the correct spot
A copy of two EKGs obtained by the student
They must have been done during your externship
You need to include the patient information and the date. If your EKG machine does not print out the EKG you can video the EKG on the monitor but you must also submit patient records showing that one was performed
You need to note if the EKG was normal or abnormal
Description of and a labeled diagram of a normal PQRS wave
The diagram needs to be labeled by you, do not submit an already labeled tracing. Make sure you cite your source
We want you to demonstrate your understanding of the waves
You need to describe what each wave and interval represents
Be sure to label the waves and the intervals
Don't forget the T wave!
Description of and labeled diagram of two abnormal wave forms
They must be two of the abnormal wave forms listed in the skill description
If you did not have any abnormal EKGs on your patients you can use an image from the text or a credible source. However, it needs to be labeled by you, do not submit an already labeled tracing. Make sure you cite your source
Be sure to label waves and intervals
