This skill will require you to prepare and identify various surgical equipment, supplies, and tools. You will need to perform pre-surgical preparation and operating room sanitation/ care. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to identify various surgical instruments, supplies, tools and understand their uses. You will also have the ability to fold and wrap gowns, drapes, and towels for sterilization; in addition, you will be competent in preparing these items for sterile surgical use by the doctor.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Digital video(s) of you folding and wrapping a surgical gown, drape and towel.
You need to demonstrate both folding and wrapping of each:
A surgical gown
A towel
A drape
They should be autoclave ready at the end of your wrap. This means you should have included both a sterile indicator in the wrap and taped the wrap with indicator (autoclave) tape. Make sure you show what you wrote on the tape.
The packs should be double wrapped.
A log book detailing the types of packs maintained at the clinic. Include a detailed list of the instruments and supplies present in each pack.
You need to include what is specifically in each sterile pack that is at your facility. You need to indicate the name of the tool and how many are included in the pack. Do not just say forceps, specify the type.
If you include gauze and suture in the pack you need to indicate what kind and how many.
You should also indicate how many of each pack you have in the clinic.
