This skill will require you to monitor anesthetized patients, recognize and demonstrate an understanding of the planes and stages of anesthesia, use anesthetic monitoring equipment, and recognize anesthetic emergencies. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to illustrate the use of monitoring equipment to monitor patients under anesthesia. You will also be able to recognize all stages and planes of anesthesia to make sure your patient is adequately and safely anesthetized.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Log book of monitoring procedures on three patients
In your log book you need to include (but not limited to)
The parameters you monitored during anesthesia and the readings you took. Don't forget to look for the clinical signs of each stage you mentioned in your description of the stages/ planes. Apply your knowledge
You need to name the stage/ plane the patient was in at the time you took the readings
Copy of all three patient anesthesia records showing what you monitored
It is recommended that you use a formal anesthesia flow chart
Demonstrate a number of monitoring techniques along with TPR and reflexes
Description of each stage and plane of anesthesia and their clinical signs
Make sure you cite your sources
