This skill will require you to prepare prescription diets. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to distinguish which prescription diets are used for a particular disease, prepare a diet particular to the patient's needs, and calculate the proper amount to be fed based on the calculated caloric needs of the patient.
Tips for materials required for submission
Detailed description of 2 cases requiring prescription diets.
Give a brief explanation of their medical condition and why the prescription diet will be helpful.
Show the calculations for the caloric requirements for the two patients you gave the case descriptions on.
Show all work for your calculations, both RER and DER.
You should have two equations, the first should be the calculation for the pets resting energy requirements. Once you have obtained that number you then need to multiply it by the corresponding life stage factor to get the daily energy requirement.
Once you have determined the total daily caloric needs for your patient then you need to look on the bag and determine how many cups or cans the patient would receive daily.
Do not just write the amount that is recommended on the bag. It is rare that the bag and your calculated amount are the same. The bag usually gives the amount to be fed for a wide weight range, while your calculation will give the amount for that specific patient.
