This skill will require you to perform jugular venipuncture for blood sampling in ruminant patients and perform IV injections in ruminant patients. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to gather the appropriate supplies, prepare the injection site for venipuncture and collect samples or inject the prescribed injection. You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of common side effects of various IV injections be describing them to your clinical supervisor.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Video of student collecting blood from a ruminant species
You have to collect the blood from the jugular vein
It has to be from a ruminant species that is covered in the scope of your externship. E.g. Bovine, goat, sheep
Video of a student administering an IV injection to a ruminant species
It has to be from a ruminant species that is covered in the scope of your externship. E.g. Bovine, goat, sheep
You do not have to inject an actual drug it can be sterile saline
Make sure we can see that you drew back on the plunger to ensure you were in the vein (aspirated)
Do not inject unless you are sure you are in the vein
Make sure that the person taking the video is at a good angle we need to see what you are doing. We understand things move fast. If all we can see is your back and not your technique the skill will not be accepted.
