This skill will require you to administer both subcutaneous and intramuscular injections to both canine and feline patients. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to deliver medication and treatments to patients and administer them at the proper site using the correct route of administration for the drug or treatment.
Tips for materials required for submission:
Make sure you show all steps from site prep until you administer the medication and remove the needle.
You will need to submit digital videos of you successfully performing each of the following procedures:
Intramuscular injection
You will have to perform an IM injection on both a canine and feline.
If injecting in the semimembranosus or semitendinosus region make sure to avoid the sciatic nerve.
Make sure to isolate the muscle. You can do this by holding it between your thumb and fingers.
Make sure you aspirate before administering. If you see blood do not inject, reposition the needle and aspirate again.
Subcutaneous injection
You will have to perform a SQ injection on both a canine and feline.
Injections should be given in the dorsolateral region. Here you should find loose enough skin.
You want to avoid the dorsal region of the neck and shoulders should be avoided, as it can be difficult to treat an abscess in this region.
Tent the skin by pinching the animal's skin in between your thumb and pointer finger and pull it in an upward direction.
The needle should be inserted at the base and parallel with the long side of the tent. This will help you to avoid sticking the needle right through the other side of the tent.
Make sure you aspirate before administering. If you see blood do not inject, reposition the needle and aspirate again. You should feel some sort of back pressure. If you do not there is a good chance you poked all the way through the other side.
