This skill will require you to culture and identify common dermatophytes. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to prepare and interpret a DTM plate and use an ultraviolet light for identification of ringworm while following OSHA guidelines for proper PPE.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Logbook with description of procedures performed
You need a description of the procedures performed. Describe in detail in your own words how you performed the tests
Describe in detail how you collected the sample and inoculated the DTM
Describe the use of a Wood's lamp
Do not forget to discuss how you collected the sample from the plate for microscopic identification
You need to perform the tests on two patients.
You need to include patient info in your log of results (signalment)
You need to include the results for each patient
Don't forget to include what you saw under the microscope
Photos of DTM showing colony growth and/or color change for two patients
The photos should be the DTMs for the two patients you discussed in your log book and the observation records for both
The DTMs need to be labeled with:
The patient name
Date of inoculation
If the label will block the growth you are trying to show write the info on a piece of paper and have it in the picture next to the DTM
Daily observation record and final test results for two patients
Make sure you have a full patient signalment
Record your daily observations as to what you see including:
Growth (character, size, depth)
Color change
