This skill will require you to know normal values of temperature, pulse, and respiration for a cow and determine values for individual patients. You will also have to auscultate the heart, lungs and abdomen on large animal patients using a stethoscope and collect milk samples and perform mastitis testing. Upon completion of this skill, will be able to obtain the temperature, pulse and respiration rates on bovine patients and compare those findings to normal ranges. In addition you will be able to auscultate the heart, lungs and abdomen and be able to discern normal from abnormal sounds. You will also be competent in assisting in sample collection and performing mastitis testing.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Logbook containing patient information and results of examination for five patients
Temperature
Pulse
Note character
Note the location it was palpated
Respiration
Heart rate
Results of auscultation of the:
Heart
Lungs
Rumen
Do not just say normal sounds. Instead write things like heart was absent of murmurs or arrhythmias. If there was an abnormality note what you heard
Remember HR and pulse are different. You should be taking both and noting if they are synchronous or not.
