This skill will require you to place intravenous catheters in both dogs and cats. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to locate the blood vessel, prepare the site, choose an appropriately sized catheter, and place an intravenous catheter in small animal patients. You will be able to demonstrate and apply your knowledge to troubleshoot intravenous catheter patency issues.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Digital video of you placing a intravenous catheter in the cephalic vein of a canine or feline patient.
You need to show each step of the procedure including prep! You need to show all of the criteria in the skill sheet up until removal. You do not need to show removal of the catheter.
Do not perform the procedure on the floor, this is a clean procedure. The only time you should be on the floor is if you have a very large patient that you cannot life onto the table.
Make sure you shave/ clip an adequate amount of the patients leg, there should not be any hair in the catheter site.
Clean the clipped fur away from your workspace. If not you will most likely pick up the hair/ fur in the tape when you are taping the catheter in.
Once you prep the site do not touch it with unsterile hand!
You can use the taping technique your site uses to secure the catheter. However, it should secure the catheter well.
Make sure you flush the catheter.
The video you submit should not be on the first IV catheter you have ever placed. It is normal to have to practice it a few times before the skill is mastered. Once you are comfortable that you can perform the skill well then record your technique.
Helpful resources in addition to your textbooks and study materials:
Accepted Sedation Levels:
Fully awake to lightly sedated for IV catheter placement.
Light sedation: patients are able to move their heads or wag their tails
