This skill will require you to prepare and evaluate blood films. Upon completion of this skill, you will be able to create and stain blood smears for cytological exam, identify different types of blood cells, perform cell counts, and recognize abnormal blood cells during the microscopic exam.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Completed blood films for three patients
You must provide a video of you making your slides from start to finish, including staining. In addition to the video(s) you will need to submit a picture of each of your slides under the microscope showing some of the corresponding morphology you have noted as seen on your slides.
They need to be for the same three patients you are providing the hematologic data for
We recommend that you keep a slide of each patient that you send, in case these skills need to be repeated
Make sure you have a good monolayer with at least 100 representative WBCs
Copy of patient records with hematologic data for three patients
Include the electronic results. You should run the results to compare your manual evaluation to, they will not be the same but should be in the same ball park
Manually examine the slides:
Comment specifically on the WBC morphology
Comment specifically on the platelet morphology
Comment specifically on the RBC morphology
Calculate the:
Leukocyte relative percentages and absolute values
You will have to have a WBC estimate to calculate the absolute value
Corrected WBC count if there are nRBC
Use proper terminology and semi quantitate as appropriate
Platelet estimate
