This skill will require you to fill PCV tubes, use a centrifuge and refractometer to perform blood counts, collect and perform evaluations on the samples, and calculate indices. Upon completion of the skill, you will be able to collect blood samples and use hematocrit tubes for creating samples you will be evaluating. You will be able to determine the WBC and RBC count and erythrocyte indices and collect samples for evaluation of CBC according to hospital procedures.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Photocopy of patient record or lab log book with results of automated hematologic tests on three patients
This means CBC results not a chemistry, this is needed in another skill
The automated CBC must have been run by you (in- house). You cannot submit results that were sent out and received from a reference lab
Once you complete your indices look at the automated results, you should be close but they will not be exactly the same. This is a good way to check your work
The automated CBC must be for the same three patients you are calculating the indices for
Log book of manual PCV and calculation of erythrocyte indices for three patients
The indices and manual PCV should be for the same 3 patients you did the automated bloodwork on
Make sure you indicate what your manual PCV was for the patient
For the calculation you need to use the manual PCV, do not use the automated hematocrit, they are not the same
The hemoglobin can also be calculated off of your manual PCV. You will need to know the hemoglobin for calculating two of the indices
Show all of your work, equations and all!
