This skill will require you to collect, prepare and evaluate canine vaginal smears. Upon completion of this skill, you will be competent in obtaining and preparing vaginal samples for cytology and culture examinations.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Log book with description of procedures performed and results for two patients
All of your patients should be unspayed. For this skill you are identifying the stage of estrus
You need to include the patient info (signalment)
In your description of the procedure, walk through each step you performed starting from patient prep to examination of the slide (collection, prep, and evaluation of the sample)
You should also include a brief patient history
Note any physical signs that were observed that correspond with your results of the patient's stage of estrus
For the results, include exactly what you observed in the microscope
Give specific cell descriptions
State the stage of estrus you believe that patient is in
Description of cell types present at each stage of estrus
You need discuss the types of cells that are found at each stage
You need to describe what the cells look like when observed under the microscope
