This skill will require you to collect and cross-match blood for possible transfusion and perform activated clotting time or buccal mucosal bleeding time coagulation tests. Upon completion of this skill, you will collect and cross-match blood for possible transfusion and be able to perform either an ACT test or a BMBT test.
Tips for materials that need to be submitted:
Video of student performing either ACT or BMBT test
It is either or, not both
The BMBT needs to be done on a canine patient
ACT can be canine or feline
If you do not have the lancet for the BMBT you can use an #11 or #15 blade. You need to make a stab incision, these are the easiest blades to do this with
If you do not have filter paper, you can use coffee filter paper or a gauze, paper towel. It needs to be a material that will wick the blood away
For the ACT make sure you record the entire procedure starting from the blood draw
For ACT you do not need to use a Vacutainer but it does need to be a clean stick
Log book with detailed descriptions of the coagulation testing procedures you performed and the test results
Include patient signalments
You need to have results for the patient in your video
You only have to describe the procedure for the coagulation test you performed
Description of procedure for crossmatching and collecting blood for transfusion
You need to discuss both major and minor cross matching methods
For blood transfusion points that should be included but are not limited to:
Site
Prep
Blood collection equipment
Method of collection
Helpful resources in addition to your textbooks and study materials:
Accepted Levels of Sedation:
Awake, light to heavy sedation, anesthesia
Note: sedation or anesthesia may prolong BMBT results
