Profile by Matt Stanton
This Cuppers-winning captain (albeit at football) is a true all rounder, being distinctly average with both bat and the ball. Remarkably, "Nugget" was one of the leading wicket-takers for Christ’s in the 2008 season with his slow but straight bowling teasing batsmen to swing and either miss or be caught. One explanation for his impressive wicket taking is that the batsmen are put off by his duck-like waddle to the crease. Throughout his years at Christ’s, he slowly grew as a cricketer whenever his girlfriend allowed him to play and he has already asked her permission to make his debut for NTMCC this year (Ed. Is this true? Is this why he never turns up to five-a-side? What else does he need permission for? Is he related to The Guns?) .
The high watermark of Simon’s cricketing career to date was being elected as Christ’s 2nd XI captain, leading them to the occasional glorious victory and a considerable number of less mentionable defeats. The low point came in the 2007 season when Simon’s name was for evermore linked with that of Menace and Blytho as the final third of the disastrous hat-trick of wickets in three balls against Judas Mostofi’s Addenbrooke's Allstars. (Ed. Was Mostofi bowling? Really? I think we should impose some sort of ceiling on the number of players allowed to have been dismissed by Mostofi.)
*** 2009 UPDATE ***
2009 has seen a significant improvement in Nugget's fielding. Developing a particular taste for the outfield, a good turn of pace and a very decent arm have been on display in the recent Not the MCC 'derby' game against the Seniors.
