Player Profile: Alistair South

Profile by Tim Muttukumaru

With a more conspicuously transferable set of skills than your average football goalkeeper, Ali has become an important member of NTMCC over the past year. Before 2008, many people's best memory of him on a cricket field was his brilliant rugby-tackling of members of Jesus II back in 2004.

Ali has since gone about distinguishing himself in a more positive fashion on the cricket field. In 2008, he played three key innings for NTMCC and was named as the player of the season. Plying his trade mainly as a wicketkeeper, Ali brings considerable athleticism and a fanatical bravery to his chosen position. In the 2006 match vs Christ's, he achieved the 'Take of the Century', a one-handed, flying vertically upwards catch to prevent a Hamer Boot beamer from going for 6 wides.

Batting initially proved something of a mystery to Ali. Though he has confidently wielded hockey sticks and APU axe-handles as if they were made out of balsa wood, Ali and his bat have sometimes looked ill-at-ease with one another. However, a mysterious and spectacular improvement was made in 2008 and he was undefeated in three successive innings. His running between the wickets was also exceptional, putting considerable pressure on fielders late in the game.

An occasional bowler, Ali has the ability to deliver the ball at a decent pace. However, he's usually so busy jumping left and right behind the stumps that he doesn't get the chance to turn his arm over.
