Player Profile: Jonathan Seed
Profile by Tim Muttukumaru
It is unlikely that you've ever played cricket with, or even met, a man quite like Jonathan Seed. His pencil thin frame and more off-white-than-white whites don't give the impression that his record demands. Just look at the statistics below: THE SEED IS A PROVEN WICKET-TAKER.
Using the tried and tested methods passed down through generations of Welsh spinners, Seedy's main weapon is flight. In principle, a ball delivered at under 30mph with little or no discernable fizz should cause no problems to a competent batsman. However, as the ball arcs towards the batsman and he is taken over by an almost frenzied sense of anticipation, he loses concentration. And KABOOM, the Seed strikes again, middle stump uprooted* as the fielders go wild.
As a batsman, Jon has exhibited, on occasion, some very neat touches. However, a propensity to admire said shot rather than run between the wickets has usually led to cheap dismissals.
Another weakness in his batting and fielding are his delicate fingers. Using the fast bowler's favourite method ("put your size 13 in front of the ball, endure any pain and get on with throwing it in"), the Seed has often fallen victim to the bobbly pitches of north Cambridge. We can but hope that he adopts the long barrier, or something similarly foolproof, in future games.
* The uprooting of middle stump is usually done by the keeper rather than the ball, but we shall gloss over that.
