Player Profile: Abteen Mostofi

Profile by Tim Muttukumaru

The younger of the Mostofi brothers by some 700 years, Abteen is very much like his brother Arash. Classy batsman, consummate gentleman, exceedingly fine conversationalist. Unlike his brother though, the outer reaches of the cricket field are unknown to Abteen's strokeplay. Much like his idol William Watson (no accounting for taste...), Geoffrey's preference is to keep his wicket intact rather than risk a more ambitious shot.

Of course, Abs' natural caution has in the past proved to be an asset. Usually an opening batsman, Abteen has seen off more than his fair share of brutal spells from ferocious fast bowlers, paving the way for more adventurous team-mates to play their shots. Problems only usually arise when there are two "anchormen" at the top of the innings and the score fails to tick over at the required rate.

As a bowler, Abteen has improved greatly over the years. Initial indications were that Abteen's wicket-taking ability might be extremely limited. However, Abs has developed into a canny operator, using his chosen methods of accuracy, banter and total lack of pace to bamboozle batsmen into errors. First seen in the 2005 match vs Not the MCC, "Plan M" is an increasingly important part of any Christ's captain's attack.

Like any good ex-captain, Abteen is a wise old head in the field. Usually pacing around in the mid-off area, Abs is a solid fielder and can be relied upon to take catches as and when required.

Abs is still based in Cambridge but we hope to tempt him down to London for a few NTMCC games.
