Player Profile: Brian Tomlinson
Profile by Tim Muttukumaru
Brian has been newly recruited to NTMCC by renowned talent scout Tim Muttukumaru. The second Welshman to join the side (the first being the inestimable Jon Seed), Brian promises to bring his unique brand of "medium fast swing bowling, with the occasional slower ball if I get tired" to NTMCC.
Brought up on the mean streets of Penarth, Brian graduated from Mansfield College Oxford in 2000 with a first class degree in Not Playing Cricket At All. Brian blotted his copybook slightly by participating in a "ferocious series of net sessions" at the British Embassy in Tokyo, in which he learned the art of ducking regularly. We are yet to establish why Curtly Ambrose retired to Tokyo, though Brian assures me that this was indeed the case. Either that or there are more 6'7 Antiguans in Tokyo than Brian had previously assumed.
During one of the games in Tokyo (umpired, as always, by two Japanese in black pinstriped suits), teams were apparently serenaded at half time by "a crack team of Japanese WAGs belting out God Save Our Queen while waving Australian flags". Doubtless the saki had taken its toll by this time and I understand that Brian's first over was dismissed for "about 16 runs".
A speedy runner, Brian is expected to be deployed in the deep (along with most of the rest of NTMCC's fielders) when not bowling.
*** 2009 UPDATE: Tomlinson bagged a catch! A steepling catch at that, in the extra cover area. Reports that he suffered a small heart attack while the ball was in the air, self-resuccitated and then caught the ball, are as yet unconfirmed.***
