1.4: Demoscene Self Portrait

A Tribute to Old-School VR and Demoscene

Part of the charisma of using VR has always been that you are immersed in the VR environment, able to see everything through the eyes of a digital version of yourself as if you were in fact located in the digital environment. But how does the VR environment see you?

This work is inspired by the aesthetics of old school VR and Demoscene. In old demos a recurring theme is apparent.

The audio-visual demos often included objects floating and spinning above surfaces, showing off the computer graphic capabilities. The idea was to combine the relatively recent technology of AR with those aesthetics so I created a low poly 3D self portrait of myself and implemented it into an AR environment.

By entering the AR environment the viewer of the artwork is able to turn himself into an old school low poly VR version of the artist, in an environment reminiscent of the Demoscene environments, resulting in the self portrait being the very object that is so commonly thrown around in these demos of the past.

The 3D sculpture was created using Blender.

The AR Environment was created using Spark AR.
