1.3 Rewind: Growing Trees

Growing Trees (2018) --lab 2

This project was created by David Lopez-Cotarelo and Jichen Wu. What makes this project interesting is that it focuses on how many people (hands) it can detect in one space, making their bonds with each other stronger. This concept fits the current situation (covid-19) very well, in the sense that we could play around with it in the way that it will grow/shrink depending how close you are to other people. With visually seeing the tree branches grow, you'd know how close you are to someone and vice versa. In the same way it was intended, we can make people work together so that the tree wouldn't grow bigger (i.e. spread the virus more). What other interactions could this installation detect that would make people have fun with each other over distance? Where else could this installation be placed? In a train, perhaps? :) Looking forward to the new technologies we will have to get used to in the new normal.
