Lab 1.1 Icon: Studio DRIFT

Studio Drift

For my new old media icons, I chose: Studio DRIFT. Lonneke Gordijn (1980), and Ralph Nauta (1978) founded DRIFT in 2007 and became well-known figures in the art and design world. Their projects usually are an interplay between, questioning and learning from, but also connecting, nature and technology to understand the world in which we live.

To me, DRIFT always seems to be able to reach a maximum effect with minimal means. Making anyone able to understand their work without knowing the background of what it actually may be about. Playing with aesthetics and the beauty in simplicity that upon further viewing reveals itself to be technically more complicated.

One of their more well-known projects is 'Drifter', a block of concrete floating in space. A mesmerising piece that plays with our perception of our surroundings. It plays with our ideas about reality, questioning what is possible, by doing something that is disconnected from what we perceive in our everyday life.
