1.3 Rewind: An Interactive "No Exit"

The project that caught my eye was An Interactive “No Exit” by Ayelet and Beryl. I find it interesting how they took a medium that is usually (there are exceptions of course) not quite interactive. In theatre the fourth wall is closed and you do not interact with the characters, nor they with you. Therefore it is surprising that they chose an existing text and reworked it for interactive purposes, it would probably be easier to think of a new plot that  could arguably be more interesting when interactive. However, the power of the pieces lies in the fact that they kept Sartre’s work. As they say, different forms for space are all enacted in theatre space, that is what grants us the narrative.

To think of theatre space as Virtual Space can still be quite relevant today, especially as they say in terms of agency. You can see what the participant will do once they get control over the virtual space and the character in them.

Again, this work has to do with the question of how to create an interactive narrative. This could for example lead to a similar idea of reworking Greek tragedies and making the choir (choros) interactive somehow. For instance letting the participant choose the general mood or the personality types on the choir. To take it even further, you can record people verbal reactions to a play and mix them together to let them be the actual choir.
