6. Working with Google Sites
Accessing and Editing Google Sites
You need a google account to access but you dont need a google email address if you dont trust the 'dont be evil' mission statement long term
I will first need to give you access and then you will be able to make changes.
Make sure you are logged in - see 'Sign in' at the very bottom of the page (light grey so hard to see. After logging in a white menu bar will appear at the top)
Sign in:
White menu bar:
Edit a page by hitting 'e', save with CTRL-s or Save/Opslaan in top right corner
All commands are also available through the menu, toolbar, and advanced operations through the 'settings' style icon on the top right.
Create a new page by using 'c'. Except for your general personal portfolio info, put all other content in subpages under your portfolio page. If you create it in the wrong place you can move it with shift m.
For more options see the top right menu (if you are not in edit mode).
We only have 100MB in total, this fills up quick!
Convert pictures to smaller sizes so that these dont take up hundreds of KBs or more (aim for <200kb unless good reasons not to, use JPEG not PNG for photos)
Use Vimeo (copy 'embed' code from Vimeo and insert in HTML view) or other video sites like Youtube (Use Insert-Youtube rather than a link) for video. Don't become a vertical video syndrome zombie and shoot in landscape rather than portrait. If damage is already done, use Vimeo rather than Youtube as it let's you post videos without the ugly black bars besides it.
Put large attachments elsewhere and link to it from the site; dont distribute binaries with source code etc.
If your refer to any content on Google Drive or other external repo, please ensure the access rights are set to public so that everyone can view the content and also plan to keep the content available for eternity (hence a preference for local small images, Vimeo etc)
You embed any rich content (such as Vimeo) by clicking the <HTML> button and inserting any 'embedding' HTML code. Youtube videos can be directly inserted using the Insert menu. So dont just put links to media, always try to embed/display on the page directly. Always try to add some for of visual/non textual media in documentation, and video is the preferred medium as it typically provides the richest experience.
Give your projects a catchy title and use that as the name for the document
