Xanthogramma

Xanthogramma hoverflies are amongst the most distinctive species found in the UK. The combination of a deep black body contrasting with vivid yellow legs and markings on the thorax and abdomen makes them instantly recognisable in the field. Historically, two easily distinguished species were recognised, citrofasciatum and pedissequum. The latter has now been split into three species, and the former into two, but details on the characteristics of these new species is not yet readily available. A detailed photographic record or specimens should be retained for future reference.

Xanthogramma citrofasciatum - Scarcer species with narrower triangles on tergite 2 and more diffuse dark markings in the wing.

Xanthogramma pedissequum
Xanthogramma pedissequum

Xanthogramma pedissequum - Stubby triangular markings on tergite 2, neat bands on tergites 3 and 4.
