Chrysotoxum verralli

Habitat: Grassy areas
Size: Wing length 8.5-10.5mm
Species account: A typical Chrysotoxum species with bold yellow markings giving a strong resemblance to a social wasp. Largely restricted to south-east England and the midlands and usually quite scarce, although 2012 saw an increase in sightings. Very similar to C.elegans in appearance, but the black front edge to tergite 2 is straight rather than curved. In addition the third antennal segment is shorter than the combined length of segments one and two in verralli, whereas they are of similar length in elegans.
