Habitat: Broadleaf woodland with extensive deadwood
Size: Wing length 10-12mm
Species account: A large and distinctive hoverfly, although it may not immediately be recognised as such. The markings are reminiscent of Xylota segnis, but this is a significantly larger species, with all black legs and red rather than orange colouration on the abdomen. Although fairly widespread, this is a scarce species, but records have increased recently.
