Herons and Egrets
Until recently the only widespread member of this group in the UK was the Grey Heron, but the inexorable northern march of Little Egrets in the last twenty years means that they are almost as familiar. The recovery of the Bittern from a historic low of 11 booming males in 1997, to over a hundred in 2011 is impressive, but this remains a secretive species of reedbeds. Following in the little egret's footsteps, Cattle Egrets have recently become a more regular sighting after a dramatic range expansion, but are still primarily a scarce vagrant.
Grey Heron - Common and widespread resident, found near any area of water.
Little Egret - Common and widespread resident, more abundant in winter, especially around coasts.
