Habitat: Ubiquitous
Size: 11mm
Species account: One of the commonest Andrena species in the south of the UK. The pale bands on the abdomen contrast with a rusty thorax. The scopae are pale. Males resemble females but lack scopae and have red hind tibiae and tarsi, the bands on the abdomen are short and neat and the wings are yellow veined near the base. The hairs on the face are pale with no dark hairs around the eye margin.
Similar species: A.flavipes shares the pale bands on the abdomen, but females have contrasting orange scopae. Males lack the red hind tibiae of A.dorsata, have dark hairs around the eye margin and have longer hairs on the bands on the abdomen. Halictus rubicundus is similar, but has 'kneed' antennae with a long pedicel, the scopae are shorter and sparse and the hind tibiae are orange (dark in A.dorsata)
