Volucella inanis

Habitat: Open habitats, gardens, parks etc.

Size: Wing length 12.25-14.25mm

Species account: The smaller of the two hornet mimicking Volucella species, Volucella inanis has recently undergone a range expansion and is now widespread across southern England, becoming more abundant in the east. The only risk of confusion is with the larger V.zonaria, which has chestnut coloured markings at the top of the abdomen compared to the yellow, square-ended markings on V.inanis. Flies from June to September.
