Habitat: Gardens, parks and open areas
Size: 8-10mm
Species accounts: A rather small Eristalis which is one of the commonest species. Always has strong white bands on the rear of the tergites and the males have the pale markings on tergite two restricted, always well short of the hind margin. On the wing, there is a very small dark patch, the quadrate sigma, which has sharply defined boundaries. Flies April to October
