Field Grasshopper - Chorthippus brunneus
Habitat: Ubiquitous
Size: 18-24mm
Species account: A large species, the Field Grasshopper can be found in almost any habitat, across much of the UK. The typical colouration is predominantly brown, but greens, greys and whites may all occur. Other than the size, the key characteristic for identification is the hairyness of the underside of the thorax. Mature adults have an orange-red tip to the abdomen, which is brighter in males. The song is a monotonous series of short chirps repeated every 2 seconds.
