Volucella zonaria

Habitat: Open areas, gardens, parks etc.

Size: Wing length 15.5-19.5mm

Species account: The largest UK hoverfly, resembling a Hornet in size and colouration, but in reality entirely harmless. Formerly a scarce migrant to the UK, V.zonaria is now a widespread resident, frequently seen nectaring from Buddleia flowers. The size and colouration are distinctive, although confusion with the smaller V.inanis is possible. V.zonaria has chestnut markings at the start of the abdomen, these are yellow and square-ended in V.inanis.
