Moment of Silence
Check in
Six word poems:
Sophia: He hasn't even bothered to call.
Doesn't he realize that I'm taken.
Get it on, all night long.
Alexandria: I'm trying to get over you.
Jason: Fallible meaningless uncontrolled spontaneous incredible love.
The rest of the six world poems will be posted on Google Docs. Everyone needs to do this tonight.
Talked about: "You Go Girl!" by Taslima Nasreen
"Shut up" vs. "Stop Talking"
Shut up is a stronger term than stop talking, it's a level up.
Stop talking is like a warning and shut up is when someone keeps talking.
Homework: 1) Post poems to Google Docs. Kristine will post them to website without names.
2) work on Wordle. The due date for the Wordle poems have been pushed back to the end of the first week of school in January, 2011.If you wish to turn your wordle in this Friday, the original due date, you can do that and your grade will be bumped up half a grade mark. If you make this choice, then work on Wordle tonight.
3) If you are NOT doing the wordle and turning it in on Friday 12/17/10, then here is your assignment for tonight: take the first stanza of "You Go Girl!" and write a reflection on one of the phrases and how you see that in your present day life or the present day life of girls. Here are the phrases you should choose from:
take it easy…
calm down…
talkin'…
sit down….
bow your head…
keep on cryin', let the tears roll…

Check in
Read part of Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow about the movie Hate
Discussed our reflection topics
Robyn: Wrote about how Hubert was treated
David: Things aren't always as they seem
Cali: Traditional view of France, not reality
Gabby: Left with dissatisfaction with the ending
Allison C. : She has a different view of Paris, projects and suburbs
Nicole: Vinz practiced using a gun, but can't actually use it
Hannah: Same as Nicole, used the gun for power, not for shooting. Vinz knew he wouldn't actually shoot a cop
Allison R: wrote about the violence in the movie. The characters were the same as Doria
Chloe: Shocked about how much hate their was
Rachel: Wrote about the metaphor and the relationships between them
Melissa: Wrote about the one day revolution, how they all changed
Tori: Wrote about how much anger/emotion towards their surroundings
Taylor: Wrote about how the people in the suburbs were out of the cities mind. Also talked about the riots
Kieran: Wrote about how kids do whatever they can do when their is no opposition
Hannah L: France isn't what she pictured, Hubert and Vinz were opposites. Hubert shot the cop when he didn't want to shoot anyone the whole movie
Silva: Didn't expect the movie to be this intense. Vinz felt strongly about shooting a cop but he couldn't.
"Traditional" View of France
- People in Paris are nice, Sayid, Vinz, and Hubert don't feel part of France
- "The world is yours"
- Big buildings
- Eiffel Tower
- High Fashion
Sky Scraper Metaphor
Man falling down saying "so far so good, so far so good, so far so good." Uses it as a symbol of French society
Man in the bathrooms story metaphor
If your only focused on yourself, you can't reach the overall goal
(Vinz is too concerned about shooting a cop, he can't mourn and get over his friends death)
One day:
Rachel: Thought of 24, feels like real time
Nicole: It's to get the details, this is whats happening
Gabby: Its important to know the specific time that things are happening
Cali: Shows the change in the characters more, also the climax and rising action is more defined
Kristine: The kids don't have any structure, their world doesn't run on time
Structure of Their Day
Kristine: No one listened to the police: no one seems to have a job. It makes sense to sell drugs, its how Hubert earns his money
Rachel: Sayid steals to make his money
Kristine: When people don't have jobs, they make money through illegal and underground activities
Taylor: Hubert also owns a gym
Violence in the movie
Hannah S: Riots
David: Attempted Murder
Melissa: Police beatings on Sayid and Hubert
Rachel: The flare gun in the club
Melissa: When police stopped Vinz, waved the gun around, accidentally killed him
Kristine: Violent language, insulted mothers and sisters. Living conditions, poverty, lack of opportunity is a form of violence
The 3's relationship
Gabby: Hubert keeps the peace in the group, kind of like Willie
Rachel: Vinz and Hubert were the two radicals, Sayid was the middle
Chloe: Sayid also tried to keep the peace
Kristine: Very loyal to each other
Nicole: Whenever they got in the fight, they always fix it
Kristine: Always fussing with each other
Kristine hands back work. Actually gave it to Robyn and she handed it back.
6 word poems
HW: Write 3 6 word poems about love and romance
The assignment, a variation of the six word memoir heard on NPR, was to write a memoir of teenage love and romance. Some responses:
Uh, oh. The condom broke. Again. (Zach)
I thought your name was Jessica. (Shaquille)
What did I get myself into? (Colin)
I love you; you love her. (Christina)
A dusty bear from Rite-Aid. Damn. (Bria)
Best way to proceed is to think of the idea you want to get across and then think of the six words.

-Brit and Tatiana
- Sophia and Alex
- Caci and Brianna B.
Take one of the things that are said to girls ("You are shameless", "You have a loose character", "You are rotten", "You are a whore") and reflect on it.
-Sophia: "You are shameless" positive statement meant in a negative way, does what they expect her not to do, doesn't feel shame about what she does
- Caci: "Calm down" why are girls always told this? Girls are supposed to be dainty and quiet
- people are scared of guys
- male-dominated society>>>guys with "perfect" image of how girls should be
- Tatiana: "You are a whore" girls are called this all the time, WHY? What does it mean to be a whore
-"gets around"
- does it literally mean " being sexual"
- Girl vs girl anger and jealousy
- Kristine: first two stanzas: things that are said to the girl to stop her, when they say you're a whore for stepping over that "line" she just says "yeah, i'm a whore", she is stepping outside of what girls should do
Homework for Wednesday (we don't have class tomorrow): write 3, six word "poems" about teen romance. We looked at a few examples in class from previous grades. Here it is:

- Problem with Turn it In, and we will discuss the essays tomorrow not today. (Only a few kids saw their grades)
Read "This Be The Verse by Phillip Larkin"
(Gaby,Tori, and Taylor read)
- Write a reflection on the word Fuck! (used in the first line of the poem)
Chloe- stress reliever
Hannah L- Loves the word "Fuck". Throws it in her sentences, "tastes better" and the way it feels.
Nicole- never wrote it on paper before. Now shouts it out a few times more than necessary. Weird how people don't see it as a big deal anymore
Alexa- the only reason people think its a big deal is because of the meaning behind it.
Kieran- Powerful word, people use it to add emphasize.
Gabby- Really bold word, its also really versital and you can relate it to the sexual term. Used in our society.
Taylor- Best way to use it is if you put it in between between words (refuckingdiculous). Fuck doesn't really mean anything but it can mean anything
Conor- Weird how it has so many meanings. Sexual meaning, beating someone up, term of disgust.
Cali- Ugly word, but i use it so much just to throw around, and to sound cool (when she was younger), grew up with it and grew into it.
Hannah S- Can't even say the word in front of Kristine. (Peer pressure from the class to say it) (She said it). Has been trained to not say it in front of her parents.
Tori- been trained to not say it in front of adults but she can curse in front of her dad, not her mom.
Melissa- Can't say it in front of her friends. Feels like its really disrespectful to say it to her elders or people she doesn't know. A relief to vent feelings to friends
Kristine- The perfect word. It feels so right, if we didn't have this word we'd have to make one up. Likes it small (like a fart) and loud and large (FUCK!)
Nicole- little step brother dropped his little car and it fell apart and he yelled fuck. Nicole tries to not say it in front of him. Little sister is taking up after her little brother. Little children start cursing and its not good.
Conor- I didn't say it when i was reading my thing, hasn't been raised to say it as if its a big deal. Its weird how some people can take it very seriously
David- Feels weird saying it in front of a teacher, sometimes with parents and says it with friends.
Kristine- Can't even listen to the word anymore. It's an interesting word choice in the poem
Listened to "Fuck You" by Cee Lo Green
Homework: Go home and read the poem again. Think about the attitude between parents- child relationships that are expressed in this poem. (Typed) Select details in the poem to help prove what you are saying

--Went over the words that we chose
--A couple of people read what they wrote on their word
Went over the compare and contrast of the 2 poems:
SIMILARITIES

-perspective: children
DIFFERENCES
-role of parents
-focus of pain
-tone
-influence of negative attitude
Read "Infant Joy" by William Blake 3x
--wrote a reflection on the words "sweet joy"
Kristine: it is a great word, a perfect word
Tati: happiness, pain free, spending an afternoon in the kitchen baking cookies with her grandmother
Caci: Genuine, authentic, so simple, but so good
Britt: wedding ceremony
There is a difference between joy and happiness. There is a reason that there is a different word.

Moment of Silence
Check In
Went over what we wrote last night about our categories
We will be watching "Hate" during Community Time on Monday!
WE GET OUT EARLY BECAUSE OF THAT ^ :D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Read "Infant Joy" by William Blake 3 times
Wrote a reflection on the words "sweet' and "joy"
Nicole: thinks of bitter joy when she thinks of sweet joy; two types of joy --> sweet joy = pure happiness (baby being born) and bitter joy = someone hurting someone else
Allie: two words do not fit together; joy seems more like a description of happiness and can be a name; sweet can be a description of an action or food; cannot put them together unless you're talking about a person
Hannah S.: hasn't felt "sweet joy" in a long time --> since innocence of childhood; when you're playing peekaboo with a baby is a good image of "sweet joy"
Alexa: focused on the joy part of "sweet joy" ; joy is a sense of happiness; image --> when you're picking someone up from the airport and you get overwhelmed when you see them because you missed them
Kieran: thinks of Christmas when he thinks of joy; you see 5 & 6 year old children and seeing the presents under the tree
Melissa: thinks of little cousins; when she goes to their house and sees her little cousins running towards her she gets really joyful and focuses on her cousin
Conor: you know that when somebody says "sweet joy" it is a truthful statement
Gabby: thinks that the words work because it creates a new phrase because alone they are simple but together they say more
David: joy --> meaning of happiness, succeeding for somebody or finding their way in life; sweet --> makes the phrase more powerful
Silva: doesn't see the two words together; looking at the world at a different angle of happiness
Cali: sweet --> food, person; joy --> December, holidays, "bright lights"
Me: I like Max
Taylor: Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder
Kristine: likes the words and always associates them with people
Picked words from "Infant Sorrow" by William Blake that spoke to us after reading it 3 times
Nicole: sees baby leaving the house and goes out into the world
Gabby: First line: parents reaction to newborn baby; father: weeping in happiness but baby feels everything BUT happy to be leaving the womb
Allie: for struggling --> overall every single person in that poem is struggling with something different but they are still happy; thought that the poem was saying that the baby was small but they still don't know what is going to happen

Gabby: helped with organization.
Think about harder categories
sexual identity:
Rachel: think about Michael. Doria is questioning relationship with Nabil.
Allison: Hally says he doesn't even like girls.
Alexa: Thinks Hally wants to be focused on school so doesn't think about girls or doesn't want to interact with other people.
Melissa: Hally saying he doesn't like girls is a sign to show superiority. he is better than them.
Cali: Hally doesn't need a girl to define him. independence.

HOMEWORK: review the categories posted, look at some other categories, think, make three more from the list of other peoples. Brainstorm and come up with questions.
Thursday, 12/2, Level 3 in class essay;
For Homework:
Post your ten categories on the Google Doc labeled level 3 C/C;
Select ONE of your categories and think about the category across the works. Brainstorm connections between the four "texts" (BE, KKT, MH, and YS); type up those notes and bring them to class. Think as deeply as you can; don't just type "struggle" across the four works; really think about each one and about yourself. Create a horizontal framework.
Thursday, 12/2 Level 7
Review of the brainstorm of categories.
For Monday, Dec. 6 you must have done the following:
1) completed (typed) your brainstorm of 10 categories
2) taken one of your categories and brainstormed notes ((that is, think and jot down notes) across 4 texts BE, KKT, MH, and YS
3) posted your categories to Google Doc for Level 7 C/C
4) read all categories on the Google Doc
5) selected FIVE categories from work of other students and then brainstormed (that is, jot down notes) on these just as you did for your own category in #2
On Monday, then, you should have six categories brainstormed; one of your own and five of others; best set up is horizontal in some form. On Monday, we will use the Google Doc and your brainstorm for group work and in class writing.
Wednesday, 12/1 Level 3
We brainstormed categories to help us analyze the four "texts": BE, KKT, MH, and OS; tonight for homework we need to do the following:
1) type quotes from the play on Google Doc called MH Quotes
2) continue brainstorm by developing at least 10 categories and typing those categories onto Google Doc called C/C categories.
Tomorrow, we will have an inclass essay.
Wednesday, 12/1 in class essay on MH Level 7
Homework: Select ONE of your ten categories and brainstorm notes under each work: BE, KKT, MH, and your own life. Type up your notes and come in tomorrow with a hard copy. So on Thursday you should have a hard copy of the ten categories and a hard copy of your thinking about one category over 4 texts. Also, use post categories on the Google document for Level 7 C/C.

Handback work on questions 10 and 16
Power: Why does Hally use "power?"
Evidence to what Hally said to Sam in the end:
Hannah L.- He didn't actually mean what he said. He loves Sam.
Kristine - What is the evidence?
Cali - He doesnt believe it. Why would he suddenly turn on his friends and start screaming at them when in the beginning of the book he was jolly and fine.
Gabby - it's been in Hally the entire time. He took out the rage, from his father, on Sam and Willie because they were the people who were there at the time.
Silva - Hally meant what he said because he didn't apologize.
Conor - Nice to think that he didn't mean it and he probably regretted it, but throughout the entire book/ play you can see his superiority. Hally knows that he is "better" in their society, not just because his parents told him he his.
Melissa - think that Hally told Sam and Willie to do things because his mother owned the tea shop. Hally isn't sorry because Sam said what he was feeling.
Kieran - he did mean it because it was the way he was raised. Always treated Willie and Sam lie servants (hitting willie with the ruler)
Kristine - When something upsets Hally, he uses his power. When things are going his way, he's fine. Same as Willie and Hilda; Willie hits Hilda because she does the wrong dance steps? That's not cool.
David - In life, if people are going through something difficult, they will react in some way. (example: hitting)
Taylor - Hally gets mad in the end because the "power card" shifts to Sam and Hally is uncomfortable with it. Sam was trying to be the father figure and Hally didn't like it.
Cali - Hally clearly cares about them because, for example, when Willie hurt his leg, Hally was worried. Hally just wasn't thinking at the minute.
Kristine - Why do people torture animals?
Alexa - because the animal can't retaliate.
Silva - the feeling of being powerful.
David - the powerful impulses. "tough guys"
Conor - same thing as being in sports, but is frowned upon.
Kristine - Why do girls pick on other girls?
Hannah S. - it brings them up and make the feel better.
Hannah L. - reminds her of Lord of the Flies. Human nature isn't good because it's kind of barbaric.
Melissa - being mean to girls and Hally treating Willie badly are similar because back then, They had "servants" and it was "normal" and picking on girls it shown on tv and the media.
Alexa - Her mom was a mean girl. Her mother was reflecting and questioned why she was being mean to all those girls and her sisters.
Gabby - It's shown in the play that power is really addictive. Everytime Sam says "stop" it fuels him. Picking on girls is kind of the same thing because every time the girl would pick on another girl, its picking on the other girls faults and not your own.
David - wouldn't forgive Hally for what he said.
Silva - You say things you don't mean if youre put in a difficult situation. Hally didn't hold back though; he kept going. He would stopped and realized he said something bad but he kept going.
Rachel - it still leaves a lasting impression, even if he apologizes. That talk is always going to be there even if you try to ignore it.
Hannah S. - you have control over yourself and what you say. He isn't a child anymore, he shouldn't be given the excuse of him "being a child"
Kristine - the first things might slip out because of him being an impulsive teenager.
Hannah L. - she says mean things to her mother. Hannah says mean things that she doesn't mean but at the end of the day they are still mother and daughter. It's the same with Sam and Hally. Sam is the "father".
Robyn - She fights with her sister and brother and Hally is just trying to get the last word into the conversation.
Kristine - doesn't only insult Sam but he SPITS on him.
Robyn - Hally doesn't understand that he is crossing the line.
Taylor - i hit my brother all the time, but it's a sibling thing. But His and Sam and Hally's are different relationships. Hally knew what he was doing and he chose not to stop.
Silva - the situation can't be compared to a mother-daughter kind of relationship. When it comes to Hally and Sam, Hally keeps going.
Kristine - What is the impulse to hurt someone?
Conor - People are saying that Hally is saying these things are because he was in the moment but in reality, Hally knows what he's doing. He means what he's saying to Sam.
Hannah S. - even though he hasn't said it before, that's what Hally's real feelings are. Racial discrimination is worse then sibling fights.
Gabby - thinking about what Hannah L. said and what Rachel said. Hally and Sam have history together. Doesn't know whether its a friendship relationship or a family relationship.
Allie - Hally's upset because of his father and he's just annoyed with his father when he's home. He's upset with his father.

Level 3 Notes by Gabrielle Garza
Moment of Silence
Kristine went around the room checking to see our Master Harold's, our group notes, and our responses to the questions from the sheet.
Some groups were more prepared than others..
DFW- 3 questions
photographs on website- Ernest Cole: Photographer in the new york times
Picture of a black nanny holding a white baby in her arms
1) Relationship of Child to Nanny
2) Relationship of Nanny to Child
3) What happens to child? How does she come to more disdain and contempt for nanny?
write responses
Relationship of Child to Nanny- the child will treat the nanny just like any other white person because the baby doesn't know the difference and the separation between white and black. As far as the baby's concerned, the nanny is just another loving, caring person
Relationship of Nanny to Child- The nanny will care for the child with the respect of a mother.
Hannah S- has had a nanny since she was a little girl, has become really close with her
Kristine- even though the nanny will grow to have caring relationships with her children, the job of the nanny is about getting paid
Hannah L- Had a nanny since she was six, has a good relationship with her. Not sure what to call you nanny?
Taylor- Has had two nanny's since he was very young. Was afraid of one, didn't have as good of a relationship with her
Kristine- If we have a relationship with a nanny that becomes very loving, if the nanny goes away or is fired, how does that affect the child?
Answer to question 3)
Alexa- Eventually the child will mature and being raised by her parents, she will begin to have more authority over the nanny from her parents teaching her to.
Silva- The baby will grow up and follow her mother's footsteps and treat her nanny like her mother has.
Robyn- The thought process of the child will change as she grows up and she will pick up different stereotypes as she grows up
Kristine- You will see how the world works and observe how other people are treating a certain person and begin to treat that person the same way everyone else is
Hannah L- Will the baby learn to resent the nanny because she was in the way of her relationship with her mother?
Kristine- Child will learn that nanny has no power, while mother has all power. She probably won't learn to resent nanny.
Cali- Maybe mother didn't want to take the role of the mom, so she had nanny do it for her?
Kristine- Sending your kid away to camp is similar, and the thing most parents do today. Everyone used to have a nanny "back in the day." We trust what our parents say, we have to come to accept society, just like people did not want to go against what their parents valued, such as having nanny's for the family in South Africa in the 1950's.

turn your papers in by Saturday (Kristine looking at them on Sunday)
SMALL GROUP WORK :)
--> what constitutes "fair help" in English Class? The Do's and Don't
Don't look at sites (spark notes) for help go to Kristine
Don't go to a "help" site and take themes the site posts that sounds closest to your own thoughts. Plagiarizing.
You can go to family members for feedback on your essays. (as long as you acknowledge it at the end of your essay "my mother listened to a draft of this paper and suggested blah blah blah")
If you talk to classmate about conflict in the reading include them in your acknowledgments.
Do not copy your best friend's answers to homework even if he/she is in another class.
Do not pretend someone else's coding is your book.
Students think it is OK to go to tutor for help but Kristine thinks it's a touchy area. Go to Kristine for help before your tutor.
Do not copy Haiku's from the internet.
Do not use an essay that someone else wrote/you wrote in a previous time.
CONCLUSION AFTER SMALL GROUP WORK WITH CLASS DISCUSSION: APPARENTLY WE HAVE TO WRITE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AFTER ESSAY'S!!!!
