In ninth grade, you presented an interpretation of a poem through images for each line. This year, you will present a different kind of interpretation, one based on the words of the poem in a design using the Wordle application. Each element of the wordle should refer to your interpretation of the poem.
Here’s what you do:
1) Choose any poem from the current group to work on:
“This Be The Verse” by Philip Larkin;
“Infant Joy” OR “Infant Sorrow” by William Blake;
“Childhood” and “Child in Red” by Ranier Maria Rilke;
“You Go Girl! by Taslima Nasreen
“Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen
1) THINK ABOUT THE POEM. Consider what we wrote in class, what we talked about in class, reflect on the general theme of childhood, and consider your own interpretation of the text. This is the most important part of the assignment.
2) Interpret the poem by deciding on a theme. By identifying a theme, you will be able to emphasize certain words in the poem. Emphasize the words you think are central to the poem’s theme by repeating them (this will make them larger in your wordle). You can keep words together by using a tilde (~) between words. For example, little~red~dress
3) Choose a color scheme for your wordle. Explain how your color scheme relates to the theme. Your reason can’t be because you like the color. The reason has to be because of some element of the poem.
4) Choose a font for your wordle. Explain how your font relates to the theme. Again, the reason has to be because of the poem you wish to emphasize.
5) Choose a layout for your wordle. Explain how your font relates to the theme. Again, the reason has to be because of the poem you wish to emphasize.
In writing about each element of the wordle, try not to use the same words or phrases. Try to extend and deepen your interpretation of the poem through the elements of the wordle. We will talk more about this in class when you see the sample.
To present your Wordle poem, you need to print out the wordle. You also need to take a screenshot of it and save the wordle as a pdf to post on the website.
Type up the explanation of each element of your wordle and turn it in.

Poem:
My mother groand! My father wept.
Into the dangerous world I leapt:
Helpless, naked, piping loud;
Like a fiend hid in a cloud.
Struggling in my fathers hands:
Striving against my swaddling bands:
Bound and weary I thought best
To sulk upon my mothers breast.
