By Friday, January 27, you should have read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka in 40 Short Stories. (Since the text is a translation, you need this version.) It is 43 pages, and you have several nights to do it. This is a famous story about a man who is transformed into a bug.
Here are the questions you need to consider in your reading. Come to class with your point and argument ready:
Focusing Questions:
1) Is Gregor’s metamorphosis real or imaginary? What is the evidence that it is real? What is the evidence that it is imaginary? Write your reasons for your conclusion. You don't have to turn in this writing, but I will check that you have it.
2) What is the meaning of the metamorphosis? What does it say about Gregor? about his life? about his relation to his family? about his relation to society? What is the metamorphosis a metaphor for? Write your conclusion. You don't have to turn in this writing, but I will check that you have it.
Please try to do the reading and interpretation on your own. Reading what somebody else thinks is not the best way to develop your own skills.
