Teacher’s Expectations for Class: The expectations below clarify the assumptions I have about our work together. Some of them may seem obvious, but I have found it’s better to be clear in the beginning of a course. In the first few days of class, we will discuss these expectations and you will have the opportunity to develop the expectations you have for me and for one another:
Bring your best self to class each day!
Your best self includes being here everyday. Was it Woody Allen who said, “Ninety percent of life is showing up”? The conversation in class cannot be shared or duplicated by a handout or an assignment. The effect of the course is experienced over time; you need to be here to experience the full effect.
Your best self includes being here on time. Focusing in the beginning of class helps all of us get into the spirit of the work. It is important that we begin on time and settle quietly together.
Your best self includes being prepared with all personal items: glasses, book bags, tissues, pens, printouts, etc.
Your best self includes being prepared with the work due that day. Use the moment of silence at the beginning of each class to help focus you on the work ahead, to let go of all distractions that would keep you from being fully a part of the group.
Your best self includes being active and thoughtful in discussion. Each person in the group makes a contribution to the good of the whole. You need to be ready to listen openly and actively and to speak respectfully and pointedly. Be courteous and respectful. Avoid even the appearance of inattention
Your best self includes turning work in on time.
Your best self includes being mindful of the appearance of your work. All work to be read by me needs to be typed.
