Notes by Cali Mangel
-Check in
-Schindler's List responses were taken out
-We then wrote a small response to the movie in our notebooks
-We asked questions on the movie:
1. Chloe: Did Schindler start off as a good guy?
Kristine: No, he used Jewish labor because it was cheaper from the camps and he was able to make a lot of money. How was he transformed?
2. Kieran: What did the people by the train with the stamps do?
Kristine: There was an entire process that was necessary for the Jews to complete. They were registered then put into the ghettos. It was an entire system (the film shows the system and the registration process, relocation of Jews, the destruction of Polish ghettos, and the new list).
3. Melissa: Helen?
Kristine: There is an entire film on Helen as an adult (HBO onDemand). Gurt= the non-comadon.
4. Alexa: If Gurt was hung after the trail, where does the daughter come in?
Kristine: The daughter was already alive.
5. Hannah S: Wife of Schindler, confusing relationship.
Kristine: You see in the news today that married men are still having sex with other women, just like Schindler. Schindler can be looked at differently from this.
6. Melissa: Pots and pans?
Kristine: Schindler made his bombs not work so that they would not kill anyone. He did not want his factorie's bombs to kill anyone. The second factory allowed the Jews to have religious services.
7. Hannah S: Why did the guy not die when the gun did not work? Why didn't the gun work?
Kristine: To kill that many people, you must have an efficient system. The gum jammed (ironic), and the innocent and poor guy was saved! The second gun then did not operate. The guy thought he would die. Very random who dies and who lives.
8. Tori: Boy gettin gout of bathtub. Why was he killed?
Kristine: Forgiveness= power. "I forgive you," and the boy who would have been beaten later, killed him because he did not want to be powerful by forgiving anyone.
8. Chloe: Why did he start shooting people?
Kristine: Because he could! Terror- not knowing when you would be killed.
9. Robyn: What happened to the guy with the glasses who was working for Schindler?
Kristine: He is the one who gets the money for the camp (Schindler uses Jewish money AND Jewish workers). He becomes the right hand man of Schindler. He would have been taken to the camps, if Schindler did not go and give him the papers (he accidently got on the wrong train). Stern handled the bribes and worked on the camp.
10. Melissa: Women were sent to the wrong place, did any of the women die?
Kristine: No, they were all rescued.
11. Melissa: The scene when the kid dropped his saddle at the barn, who was that?
Kristine: A comadon.
12. Chloe: When the baskets were being gathered, were they hidden there?
Kristine: That is the black market. During a war, certain items are harder to get (coffee, delicasy), they have been hidden and then people pay a price for them.
13. Chloe: The little boy that knew people were being taken from their homes. What was he?
Kristine: He was Jewish. He was someone who was like a mascot where the Germans would laugh at him. He maintained order among the other Jews.
14. Melissa: Why did Schindler go to jail for a day?
Conor: Kissing a Jewish girl.
15. Hannah S: Blue eyes, blonde hair, can they still live?
Kristine: No, because they are not Arian. They can try to pass but it is Arian by blood that Hitler wants.
---In what way did this movie help clarify or help you understand the Holocaust?
Chloe: Whenever I saw things about the Holocaust (or learned), I never learned about people trying to help the Jews, especially a Nazi.
Nicole: I always thought it was individuals in the Holocaust, but this film showed families trying to stay together. The film made things 10x worse because I saw the separation.
Conor: I never knew the high- ranking people were not into the Nazi
Hannah: I don't think I learned anything I didn't already know. But, in the movie, I never really had seen anything from the Holocaust. Different from reading or learning about the Holocaust.
David: I was surprised. Thought it was a movie with just a list and a guy but realized it was a guy who was a Nazi and tried helping the Jews.
Rachel: I saw the randomness, randomly shot people. You have no idea who or when.
Kristine: You see in Night, when you never know. Which is the right line? Who is going to die? When?
Gabby: The sense of identy you have, can be stripped from you right away. Your entire sense of humanity can be taken away from you when a group of people decide that you are evil. What will be the next thing will happen? This can happen anywhere, anytime.
^Kristine says this is a good point. Genocide is not gone from the world. Lessons are to be learned.
Silva: She remembers one part in the film when a wife said, "There could be worse," and the husband says, "It's not getting worse."
Nicole: When everyone is looking for a hiding spot (kids). Everyone is silent. People do anything they can to survive one more day.
Melissa: People did a lot to get food and would kill each other (Night). This movie really showed and supported this to me, giving watch.
*The story of Oscar Schindler was known to many people.
-Spielberg tried to film every survivor of the Holocaust (Shoa).
Images:
1. Girl in the red coat:
Cali: Red is a happy color. COuldn't belive that she was dead later on.
Melissa: Had to rewind also. Attatched to her even for that brief minute. SHe was never in any lines, she was just dead.
Hannah L: Innocent girl, you thought maybe survived. You had a little hope--> when she died the hope was gone for everyone else.
Nicole: No hope for anyone anymore when she died. The color showed the hope is back. Little girl saw a lot of chaos
Alexa: The little girl had a beginning of the story when we first saw her. Then when we saw her dead, it was the end of her story. We saw her entire story.

TOMORROW: READ THESE PIECES OUT LOUD. THINK ABOUT SCHINDLER'S TRANSFORMATION. WHAT CHANGES ALONG THE WAY? WHERE WOULD YOU PIN POINT THE BEGINNING OF HIS TRANSFORMATION TO WHEN HE BEGINS TO HELP THE JEWISH PEOPLE?
Wednesday and Thursday: watched video of "Genocide" from World at War series; began discussion of Night
For Tuesday, May 24, select two moments in the memoir that struck you as particularly vivid.
Tuesday, May 17:
Notes by Chloe
discussion of the movie "O" and its relation to the play
Kristine: think about how using teenagers limits othello and helps it.
-they cannot be married
-impulsiveness of teenagers
-networking of teenagers
David: setting, they cant really go many places because they are at high school.
Gabby: In the play you could have all of the different characters together in one room but the only place you could have everyone together was at a basketball game. In the movie we could not really see the dynaics of the characters
Melissa: Putting it in a high school setting helped Iago and how he was making lines because of gossip in high school.
Kieran: It is weird to see a high school student strangle a girl and killing people.
Conor: It was not realistic how people were shooting eat other after only a four month relationship. It would have been better to tone it down.
Taylor: The fact that it was in high school made it weird how quickly O jumped to the conclusion of killing her.
We wrote down questions and things we would like to discuss about "O" the movie:
Alexa: It was weird to give her a scarf in a high school. Why not modernize the gift?
Melissa: Why didn't Iago just shoot O right after he shot Emilia.
Kristine: O killing himself shows that he acknowledges how he has destroyed his life and it is over.
David: Why did they focus more on Iago in the movie than in the play?
Nicole: Did the directors make Iago take steroids to show Iago's anger?
Hannah: Why did he take the drugs and why did Iago pay for the drugs.
Gabby: i don't see how the drugs related to the play.
Kieran: Why does Iago have an obsession with birds?
Rachel: The pigeons are always unnoticed like Iago was.
Elements for discussion:
Nicole: Liked the way they did the scarf scene when they lose the scared
Taylor: The movie was ignorant. Othello was a star basketball player, run in with cops, had a drug problem before, every scene they had rap music. The movie was very stereotypical. They did not rise above stereotype in "O" but they did in the play.
Gabby: Used all of the stereotypes to show his race and the emphasize that there is a separation between him and the rest of the students.
Hannah: the rap music was not directed only towards O. It sometimes pushed the stereotypes but not always.
Kristine: in the play they stereotype Othello as being a part of witchcraft because that's what they were used to. In the movie they stereotype him as being a sexual predator and taking advantage of girls.
Kristine gave back all of the work we have done on Othello.

DFW about manipulation (how and why it was successful it if worked on you or how you did it to someone else)
Manipulation: acting in bad faith to get someone to do what you want
Properties of Manipulation: extending the truth (making up aftermath of something that is true), depends on trust-person doing it-has to perceive trusting person, benefit to the person-"promise", want/need to hear how their benefiting, knowledge of the person: know their need, desire and weakness, "secret"
CONOR HAD HIS BOOK TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Went over last night's hw (Iago's speech)
^ Iago may be sexually frustrated, thats why he always refers to sex negatively and thinks everyone is sleeping with his wife
Played game about finding the subtext
^ everyone has a new found love for fred :)
HW for tonight: Read Plot summary of 2.3, then read Othello's entrance 2.3 and read rest of scene. (do you agree with Iago's or Cassio's idea of reputation?)
Wednesday, April 13
We role played 2.1. lines 182 on. For homework, prepare Iago's speech (See Sequence of Work on Othello)
Monday, April 11
Notes by Kieran Locke
Read Othello act 1 scene 3
Othello tries to prove why Desdemona loves him
Everyone stood on their chairs except for the people playing Othello
Listened to Desdemona's little speech after Othello speaks
Read Brabantio's speech to Othello
-Plants a seed of doubt(about Desdemona)
-Because of anger
-If she betrayed her father, why would she be honest to Othello?
Desdemona
-Two-faced
-Acts differently around Othello
-Gave up her world(her family, life in Venice) for love
Iago's speech to himself
-Desdemona and Othello won't stay in love
-Iago wouldn't spend time with Roderigo if it didn't benefit him
-Hates the moor
-Thinks Othello had sex with Iago's wife (might not be true)
-Even though he doesn't know if its true, he will act like it is
-Iago can do what he wants because Othello trusts him
-Othello is too trusting, he will be easy to trick
Why does Iago hate Othello?
-Othello promoted Cassio instead of Iago
-Othello might have slept with Iago's wife
Watched the beginning of act 2 with Othellos ship in the storm
Hw: Read act 2 scene 1 from line 182 to the end of the scene
Read Iago's soliloquy in act 2 scene 3, compare it to Iago's first speech

1) presented scenarios we worked on on Monday
2) discussed the scenarios
3) outlined a brief preview of action of Othello first scene
