By Jonathan Blum
We started the day off watching a quick Youtube video of what John Merrick would look like without his condition. We related it to what we thought he looked like and any thoughts we had.
--What comes to thought when you think of Frankenstein?
- A monster, green skin, stitches, anger, aggression, mad scientist, tamed, isolated individual,
-- WOW WERE WE WRONG!!! Frankenstein is the name of a book written by Mary Shelley- first written in 1814- the subtitle of the book is the modern Prometheus. (Prometheus is the god whom gave people fire). The word Promethean is an English word. It helps people but is destructive. Frankenstein is the name of the doctor who creates the creature. The doctors full name is Victor Frankenstein.
WE THINK OF the 1931 film created by James Whale, called Frankenstein. This movie consisted of a creature with all of the characteristic we thought of in the beginning of class! So, Suspend everything you first know about Frankenstein.
Beginning of novel:
A half dead man pulled out of the water is named Victor Frankenstein. Victor tells Walton a story... Chapter 1.... Chapter 1 is Walton writing a letter to his sister. Victor tells Walton his story... In the middle of the book, the center of the story, is the creatures own stories. A story through a story in a story. It may be difficult to read at parts because of this slight confusion. This book will raise a lot of issues, including the theme of science. How far should science go? Once you have done something, don't you have to take some responsibility for it? What is a human being? It this creature, created by Victor, human? What do we owe him?

What is a true transformation?
Can be physical - change of shape
Can include contentiousness
Change in Identity - consciousness changes but outward shape does not.
Improving appearance,
We are going to be writing our own story for a time when you transformed.
- Check the "Writing Assignment on The 'metamorphosis'" tab to the left, for the assignments goals and limits.
(All these elements help the reader to understand and to appreciate the meaning of your transformation. The transformation should help us understand the experience in a way that only metaphor can. (Since these pieces are to be shared with the class, do not write about a topic which is private.)
- Brainstorming some Ideas for transforming into a "monster". Remember that there should be some sort of epiphany you experience.
- Homeless, disabled, perfect, self-image, a family member, a different gender, race.
We saw the Simpsons version of the story. Gregor Sampson? More like Homer Simpson.
We wrote about what we think the ideas are for what the meaning is of the story (the metaphor)
- Disconnection between Gregor and his family.
- Alienation Gregor has emotionally and intellectually from his family.
- Alienated from his self.
- His own desires, needs and feelings.
-Societies views of a less fortunate family. ((He is actually middle class))
- He is a worker: a criticism for what work has become. He mine as well be a bug because he is unappreciated. (the world of work).
- A metaphor for someone who has some sort of illness or abnormal condition that separates him from the norm.
- He is dependent on the family.
THINK ABOUT THIS STORY WHEN YOU ARE WRITING YOUR TRANSFORMATION STORIES

Discussing Hally vs. Willie & Sam
Hally:
- His feelings and experiences are the focus
- goes through the most dramatic major changes
- His conflict with his father is the foreground (metaphorically, his conflict is brought to the audience)
- His experience- past, present, and future?
- His statements provoke reaction
Willie & Sam:
- The relationship among 3 of them are center of attention; Willie & Sam- foreground
- Sam and willie do the teaching about life to the audience.
- Structurally: They are there in the beginning, and they are there in the end.
- Sam and Willie do the teaching of Hally
- Dancing= metaphor: dream and a world with out collisions
- Since Willie and Sam are connected to dancing, they are the center.
This play is about Black-White in South Africa
"Black Space"
In the beginning, Sam instructs, Willie listens.
In the end, they are both dancing- "dreaming."
Perfect world with out collision is the two of them.
In the beginning, Willie was complaining about Hilda and he hit her.
In the end, he said he's going to stop beating Hilda.
As soon as Hally arrives, they start working.
