The play Coming Home suggest the power of family, love and support and the memories it offers. The relationships between Veronica, Mannitije, and Oupa show a great deal of love that wont be forgotten, even after they have gone. Veronica expresses her love for her son when she made the choice to come home, leave Cape Town, in hope for a better life for her and her child. This play illustrates that even when times get tough, it brings people together, “ you know something Mannitije, I think we must be together for this on. Face whatever is going to happen together. It’s to much for one of us alone But together we can help each other... when the time comes. Make each other strong.” Page 95. Though Veronica becomes very ill with aids, Mannitije and Alfred become closer and form a relationship. “ But life is strange Mannetije! Because look now –she’s my wife and I am also her husband. And because of the now I also got you”- page 83. Towards the end of the play Oupa’s presence and memories still stayed with his great grandson, Mannitije. Though Mannitije never got to meet Oupa, his love will always be there to guide him. Oupa compares planting pumpkin seeds to his life, and how to Mannitije should “work harder” page 98 and not give up. The importance of family and support is valued in this play through each generation and relationship.
