A world that I recently entered was the world of independence. Last year, in my ninth grade year, I had to be driven around everywhere and had to rely on people who had cars in order to get around. But just recently over the summer I started to be more independent in my traveling. One day my mom and I were arguing about how I was going to get to downtown center city. My mother was not happy with the fact of driving me all the time. So we equally decided I would take the train downtown, and once I would get downtown I would just walk to my friend’s house. Ever since then I have been taking the train into the city and have a new found independence.
Taking the train into the city is something that I have always been interested in doing. I always wanted to this because one, I did not want to be dependent on others for transportation. The other reason I wanted to take the train alone was because it also made me feel more mature and independent.
The best thing for me about taking the train downtown is getting my ticket and telling the ticket collector where I was going. For some reason when he is coming up to give me my ticket I get nervous and get butterflies in my stomach to say “30th street station please”. Once I have shared my destination I feel relived. The first time I took the train alone I was so excited about getting my ticket I put it in my bag and it currently is hanging in my room. Though, I am independent about traveling I still have to update my parents to let them know I made it downtown safe and sound. It may not be complete freedom but I still feel pretty mature and independent.
