1640-J-THE REMARKABLE LETTER

THE REMARKABLE LETTER

The following letter from the Duke of Clarence was received by Captain Hon. James King, Commanding Officer of HMS Jason on about 5th August 1814. It is reported that he read it at breakfast in the presence of his Surgeon, James Hall. The use of capital letters is believed to be the same as in the original.

Dear King

You are going to be ordered to take the Princess of Wales to the Continent. If you DON'T COMMIT ADULTERY WITH HER, YOU ARE A DAMNED FOOL!

You have my consent for it and I can assure you that you have that of MY BROTHER THE REGENT.

Yours (DUKE OF CLARENCE)
