Reginald Stanley Kelsall
When Reg first arrived in NZ he worked in the gumfields in the North of the country. It was the worst job. Only Maori and Europeans with no skills did that job. The gum was dried resin from trees that once populated much of the top half of the country. They used to dig for it in swampy marshland where the trees once stood. The gum was sent to England and used to make varnish and glue."
Reginald Stanley Kelsall and Maria Collins (1877-1951) were Dominic Kelsall's Great-grandparents.
Maria's mother was Mini Karapo KEREHOMA, born in 1838, New Zealand North Island. Mini married Francis 'Frank' Collins (1825-1877). In 1854 Electoral Roll, Frank was a 'sawyer' in the Bay of Islands.
It is probable that Frank arrived from Australia, some time after 1851, and took work with the timber industry and the merchants of forestry produce.
Reginald Stanley Kelsall was born a twin in 1875 in Prestwich, Lancashire, England and baptised 14 Feb 1875 at St. Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England. His occupation in England was Fish Monger.
Reginald and his twin Sydney had become 'too hot to stay' in England and so were sent into exile. They were sent abroad in the closing years of the nineteenth century. Sydney emigrated to the U.S.A. and Reginald to North Island, New Zealand where he married Maria Collins in 1900. He died on June 1st 1935 at Auckland. Reginald Stanley’s Kelsall moved his family to Peria, New Zealand and their stories largely known from his great granddaughter Liza Kelsall ~
“Reg married a woman who was half Maori [Maria Collins]. Her name was Maria (pronounced Mariah, as in the singer). Maria was descended from an important Maori lineage of chieftains. I can trace that lineage back to before the Polynesians came to NZ.
