~ Farmer, shepherd ~ New England Innkeeper, Breeder of race horses ~
Extract from A Newspaper article of August 12, 1927 entitled "Early Muswellbrook, Hotel Keepers of the '60s" by William Bridge give an account of his presence and in summary details from 1862:
Martin Donohoe was proprietor of the "Harp and Erin Inn" a house and Inn in Denman, on the trek to the settled inland districts of New England (County of Northumberland).
The property was one of eleven inns and taverns in town competing for the trade of carriers and drovers off the main route through Northern New South Wales and Queensland. They would stay overnight and bullock teams would be drawn outside the Inn and quoit pitching and skittles were popular pastimes in the leisure hours.
"Martin was a sporting character and owned a competitive New Warrior colt called Victor, being prepared for racing in the venues across the Murray River. The colt however, was the victim of a most diabolical attack by some miscreants, and was found dead in the paddock one morning having bled to death from injuries received. A substantial reward failed to lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators of the deed"
