Historical person: (no known relationship) - Isaac Watts
Isaac Watts b. July 27, 1674, Southampton, England, was the eldest of nine children. His father, a Dissenter from the Anglican Church on at least one occasion was thrown in jail for not following the Church of England.
Isaac, an intelligent child, loved books and learned to read early, and began learning Latin at age four going on to learn Greek, Hebrew, and French. From an early age he enjoyed rhyming, even his conversation was in rhyme. His father annoyed at this told him to stop, however when the rhyming persisted, he was further chastised and strapped, and little Isaac cried out:
"O father, do some pity take
And I will no more verses make."
Isaac followed his father's strongly biblical faith and not the national Church of England, so he could not attend the Universities of Cambridge or Oxford. He did attend an academy sponsored by Independent Christians. After completing his formal schooling, Isaac spent five years as a tutor and began to devote himself diligently to the study of Scripture.
In 1707 he published his first edition of Hymns and Spiritual Songs and went on the write about 600, some of which are still in use today.
