Peter Nathaniel Luck Beck
son of Nathaniel Beck and Ellen Luck nee Coates
son of Nathaniel Beck and Ellen Luck nee Coates
Nathaniel Beck was a common law partner of Ellen Luck, after the death of her first husband George Luck in 1852. Peter Nathaniel (or Athaniel) Luck born 1858 at 'The Village' near Kings Plain, was the youngest child of Ellen Luck nee' Ellen Coates,
Peter's birth was some five (5) years after the death of George Luck. Ellen Luck raised her children around Blayney during the gold rush years and this was also bushranger country. Local families knew of the bushmen from personal experience. Peter Nathaniel Luck was most probably the son of Ellen and Nathaniel Beck alias Daniel Burns.
Ellen retained the family name of Luck for her latter three children, although Peter, the youngest child of Ellen Coates' was recorded on the death record for Nathaniel Beck, claiming he was both her companion and father of Peter, which maybe reinforced by their name in common - Nathaniel - which suggests his parentage.
Nathaniel Beck was a British shoemaker, a convict, with ticket of leave and had been granted property to work as a farmer and also worked in the mines. His arrival record into NSW shows an alias Daniel Burns, presumably a name taken after his mother Ann Burns or Barnes.
Bev Earnshaw writes: "Stories told by old-timers like Peter Luck and his contemporaries should be preserved by their descendants because they are the folklore of the bush and part of the Australian culture. Peter used to say that his family was on the friendliest terms with the bushrangers and their visits to the homestead were like the arrival of Santa Claus. Although they never slept at the house, they would camp behind the log fences, always with someone on watch and horses saddled for a quick getaway. On one occasion, the story goes, when the troopers were searching the district for the outlaws, Ellen was unable to go to warn them herself so she took Peter from his bed late at night and sent him to alert them.”[i] Peter was known around Blayney as a "good story teller" who passed down an "oral history and many a bush yarn to his children and grand children". (see Beverley Earnshaw, Century of Pioneers.)
Peter Luck when aged 25, married Sarah Worling, in September (either) 1882 or 83 bearing three or four children and family raised three children.
Sarah Worling was born in 1862 in Bathurst, Australia. Her parents were John Worling, born 1822 and her mother, Elizabeth Sterne(ii) (Steam) born 1825 and they were from Haslingfield, Cambridgeshire, England and arrived with three children (one of whom died on the voyage) in December 1855, aboard the ship "Kate". John lived in Blayney from the late 1860s to 1900s. (Story Sourced from - roslynallen1 on ancestry.com).

Typhoid.
The Blayney Advocate editor unburdens himself as follows : " The typhoid epidemic is making its appearance again in Blayney. Every year when tbe furnaces at the copper mine suspend smelting operations typhoid makes a vigorous attack on the town. Perhaps the few who are foolish enough to assert that the fumes from the furnace are injurious to the health of the community may be able to explain." [If the faots are as stated above we think an official enquiry should be made into the matter.

Sarah Worling died as a young mother on April 30, 1888, in Bathurst, Australia, at the age of 26. Her cause of death was Typhoid Fever; a condition prevalent in the Goulburn area that year. 'Dick' Burton (Berton) John Luck (1884-1963) was born on 04 March 1884 in Carcoar, New South Wales. Burton John Luck married Elsie M Jennings in 1907 at Orange, New South Wales. (BDM 8414/1907. Bert died 1963 aged 79 years (D# 8252/1963).
B J Luck held title to blocks 242 & 243 (Blayney outskirts) from c. 1919 and sold one block (242), to D.W.Luck in Feb.. 1922.
Child Minnie Luck, was the daughter of Burton John aka. Dick Luck and Elsie May Jennings. Minnie Luck, B: 1907 in Orange, New South Wales, Australia; 38454/1907; died 21st. January 1922. (source Elizabeth Luck Bible from 1880).

Richard 'Dick' Councelor Luck (1914-1993)
'Bob' Norman Willis Luck (1886 - 1958), Died 1948 aged 72 years. Married Ada (Posey) Conn, daughter of Edward Conn and Rosa Wilson - see chart with image of Jane Dean...children include Violet Rose Luck (1912-1971); BDM NSW 39228/1911, NORMAN W & ROSE A. COONABARABRAN. 1936 - Marriage to Leo Joseph Haines, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia; Death: 27 Aug 1971 - Age:59-, Yeoval, New South Wales, Australia.
Violet May Luck (1887 - 1957). Violet married Kingsley Martin (Matin) and their daughter was Dorothy Boyd (nee Martin) b 26.08.1928.
Peter may have been unable to care for three children after Sarah's death and his sister Susannah apparently took care of them and was known as "Ma Wallace".
When Peter married Elizabeth Patrick, in 1890 at Blayney, he apparently maintained the separation of the children of his first marriage (see photo of Ma Wallace). The original three children of Peter and Sarah were not all accommodated with the second family. We are advised via Jan Wallace, that Violet May Luck told her daughter Dorothy, that herself and her siblings went to live with a woman, she knew as Ma Wallace, and was Peter's sister Susannah M Luck (1856-1941) who married Charles Wallace (1852-1938) in 1877(Iv).
Children appear to have mixed freely in the manner of an extended family and perhaps the name Wallace was passed down to Ben (Donald Wallace) Luck and his son Wallace Luck, as a tribute to her goodwill.
Peter Luck was appointed Council poundkeeper in 1889and retaind the position for 30+ years. The pound may be the farmyard image above, if so it is at the East end of Matha St by the Belubula River, but the river does not appear nearbye in the image
. This animal pen is strewn with timber. The hills in the background have yet to be identified to determine the location of the image. Based on existing hills, topography mapping and google earth street view, it appears to me, to be in the vicinity of 'Lucks Lane' Blayney looking in an easterly direction. The street view at 3438 Hobbys Yard Road approximates the background. Shadow suggests the time of day was about mid-day and Peter is facing a Northerly aspect of the site. The clothing of the family suggest it is a cool time of year. The older boys are not present which is probably a clue if we can answer where they are and why the girls are in the picture and so well dressed.

OBITUARY ~ Jan 7, 1942
Mr. Peter Nathaniel Luck one of our district's oldest identities passed away at his home at Blayney on Wednesday afternoon. Though for a number of years he had been a chronic sufferer from rheumatism, our old townsman was always bright and cheery despite his affliction and whenever possible made his way down town to meet old friends. Born at 'The Village' near Kings Plains 83 years ago, Peter Luck was the last surviving member of an old district family. In his youthful days he was one of the smartest athletes in the district being a noted pedestrian both on the flat and over hurdles. In both spheres he won many valuable monetary prizes and trophies throughout the west. He was District Bailiff and Pound keeper for many years and widely known and appreciated for his Sterling qualities.
