Benjamin Carver operated a grocery shop in London and his friends and business associates wrote a letter of appeal, requesting that he be transported on one of Winchester and Co. ships to the town of St. Johns, the capital and largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the oldest English-founded city in North America / Canada.
The signatories were;
Mssr. Winchester & Co. 61 Strand - Merchants, trading to the Islands including the Island of St. John's, Newfoundland in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. William Winchester (1748-1820) lived in the Strand, (61 Strand, Mdx.) where he ran the stationery firm of Winchester and Co. and other partners included Vanham, Kirkham, Yockney, Harris and Company. He later moved to Cecil Street and Acre Hill, Malden, Surrey.
