Ryan Clan Motto "Malo mori quam foedarid"
Cornelius Ryan (1813-1877) was born in Tipperary, Ireland son of Cornelius Ryan and mother Catherine of the Roman Catholic faith. He also is referred to as Patrick Ryan.
Cornelius was sentenced for assault at Tipperary on 27 October 1838 and given a sentence of 7 years. He arrived a convict in Australia on the 17 June 1839, aboard the "Waverley", Master James Barr. Cornelius was described in the ships Indent as 5" 81/2" ruddy complexion and freckled, brown hair and hazel eyes. He also had scars on the forehead, head and left eye, on the knuckles and shin. Cornelius received a certificate of freedom in 1845 (#1436). He had a brother Edmond Ryan "out 7 years".
His recorded occupation was settler and farmer and he died 27 February 1877 at Triangle Creek, buried at Long Swamp, near Bathurst (BDM NSW # 3755/1877).
The Bathurst Historic Society claim Cornelius Ryan married twice.
He first married Margaret Jane (Peggy) LONG in about 1835 Tipperary Ireland. Their daughter Mary Jane Ryan was born 1833 in Thurles, Tipperary, Munster, Ireland.
In about 1843/44, Cornelius Patrick Ryan formed a relationship with Eliza Ann Watt, married by common law in Bathurst.
Eliza was given permission to marry Daniel Gainon per Guildford(7), age 39. Permission to marry: 22 July 1841. Bathurst. Eliza A Watt per Margaret(3), aged 17. There was "No issue" and Daniel died in 1843.
Eliza Ann Watt (aka. Elizabeth, Eliza Watts, Lizzie Watson), born about 1824 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland, possibly the daughter of Samuel Watts and Anne Sullivan (not confirmed).
Eliza Watt5 was a child’s maid when charged with stealing clothes; she had priors and was tried and convicted on 21 Oct.1839 at Antrim, Ireland and sentenced to transportation for seven years. Eliza arrived in New South Wales, on 28th. April, 1840, aboard the ship ‘Margaret’ - 131 convicts included Eliza A Watts, age 16, born Belfast, 4' 9.5" height.
Her brother Robert Watt may have arrived six months earlier.
Cornelius died 27 February 1877 and was buried 1 Mar 1877 at Long Swamp, Bathurst. (Ryan, Cornelius: aged 62. son/Cornelius & Catherine (Ryan); b. Upperchurch, Co Tipperary, Ireland; h/Margaret (Long) & Eliza (Watt). Birth: 1815. Death: 27 Feb 1877; burial ~ Long Swamp Catholic NSW [RC])

Phillip Tariff's reference: 1094 / Eliza Watts aged 37 when convicted of receiving stolen goods and on 15 Sept. 1825 at Middlesex was sentenced to 14 years. She was single and had priors in Middlesex gaol.
The ship's surgeon commented on 18 Jan. 1826, that Eliza had been a cripple for many years and had Rheumatism of the Joints. He said she "had conducted herself with an exceeding degree of decency, much to her credit." Eliza died on 24 June 1826 in hospital at Hobart.
Eliza Ann Watt - Refs: Convict records: CO 207 3 - Catholic girl 16 years, 4'0" pale much freckled; brown hair & eyes; scar on top lip; RWAW on upper right arm. Blue ring on forefinger of right hand. Brother Robert out 6 months. About six persons known as the name Eliza Watt(s) arrived before 1842 and the person likely to be correct would have been born between 1815 - 1826 and I have assumed the person aboard the ship "Margaret"arrival: 17 Aug 1840, to be the most probable. Outstanding research for Eliza Watts arrival in Australia continue to cloud the story, also how and when a common law relationship began with Cornelius Patrick Ryan together with date for Eliza's death (Was it Eliza Baker in 1914 which could make her about 100?).
Three men of similar age and name of Cornelius Ryan[i] arrived as immigrants and appear on the New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896, yet the father of our great grandfather according to the Bathurst Historic Society and the Pioneer Index was a convict and not one of these free men.
There is also a daughter Mary Jane Ryan born 1833, Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland, accredited to Cornelius Patrick Ryan and Ann E Watt b.1815 and arrived in Australia. Some of her records show her mother was Jane so this person is unsolved.
Outstanding research for the death of Mary or Margaret Long remains to be resolved as my Research found another couple, by similar names of Peggy Long and Con Ryan who appear to have migrated to America or did so and were confused with the Australian Cornelius Ryan? It is possible Margaret Long is not associated to the family herein discussed.
“Malo More Quam Foedari” is the Ryan family motto in Latin ~ English translation “I would rather die than be disgraced".
