"In Ireland, everything is hopeless but we never take things seriously"
The Republic of Ireland lies to the west of the larger island of Great Britain from which it is divided by the Irish Sea. The island is also divided politically between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland which remains part of the United Kingdom. The British began their experiment in "plantation" (..) in Ireland and have been a controversial and polarising influence there for 800 years.
In the fictional and period novel, "Tipperary" (2007), Frank Delaney writes a compelling history involving a turbulent era that would shape modern Ireland. It is set in the 1860s. Extract..."Colonisation is one of the world's oldest stories - history, as the saying goes is geography. The freedom struggles, of countries trying to overthrow their invaders, have given us some of our most enduring myths. The drama is universal. Undercurrents like a volcanic core of indigenous people indignant, rages secretly against occupation, and awaiting eruption. Around them reside a quiet majority, coping with domination, while on top of both, sits a foreign ruling class, imposed upon and exploiting those below. From afar, the controlling power rules severely, until the inevitable revolution comes."
