Thomas Putland, born in Sussex, England about 1810 was employed as a farm servant. His parents may have been George Putland and Sarah Ransom who also lived in Sussex.
Thomas Putlan (1810 - 1876)
Before the 1860s only a few persons of the name Thomas Putland arrived in Australia and very few born before 1850 however, determining his ancestors has few clear leads, although his death certificate confirms Thomas arrived from Sussex, England, a county where the name Putland was common.
In Australia Putland families settled around Adelaide, South Australia and in New South Wales districts of Goulburn (Argyle) and Bathurst (Abercrombie District).
Thomas Putland was on trial and convicted of sheep stealing and criminal records show that a trial was held on the 17th. March 1834 during the Lent sessions at Horsham, Sussex Assizes (place of conviction was “Lewes” part of the Sussex courthouse at 182 High St, Lewes, East Sussex). Thomas was sentenced to life, commuted to transportation to New South Wales and registered 27 Mar 1834. He was received aboard the “Hardy” moored in Portsmouth then "disposed of to NSW" on 21st. July 1834, transported on 25 Jul 1834 via the vessel "Hooghly" (Hooghly (4) ~ aka Hougley, Hoogley). Thomas arrived in Sydney Cove on 18th. Nov 1834 and was "assigned for disposal" to Robert Smith, a settler resident at Campbell's River, in the district of Bathurst. The ship arrived in NSW 18 Nov 1834
Description: aged 24 on arrival, recorded as a Protestant, single, farm servant, 5' 1" Ruddy complexion, Lt brown hair, Hazel eyes; and under remarks states - blue ring on 4th finger of right hand.
Thomas, a farm servant of Bathurst, appears on the New South Wales settlers and convict lists for 1833/34 and on the 1837 General Muster as assigned to the Church Corporation*. He was granted a Ticket of Leave on 12 December 1842. It is probable that Thomas married and worked in this area but I have found no record of the years 1842-1860.
The marriage record (#1252/1860) show Thomas “Puttand” married Mary Ann Ritchie on 11 June 1860 and the marriage registered in Barraba (Bathurst) New South Wales. Refer: https://sites.google.com/u/0/d/1WwnGof93HnW5Xc5zQor2KS0TVPzvve6l/p/1LVW6HWLwnCWBW6hd_tlJwhSkxOEqaPzf/preview?authuser=0

We know that 1876 was the year of the death of Thomas Putland, aged 59 (?) shepherd. His widow, Mary Ann Marlow (Ritchie), lived at Kings Creek, Rockley. It is interesting that his agrarian occupation and reason for his coming to Australia were related to farming and to sheep and possibly his career was always related to these occupations throughout his time in Rockley.
