~ Childhood in British India and Cork, Ireland, Arrived Australia c.1837 ~
In December 1817, the 46th. Regiment had arrived in Madras (now Chennai) sailing from Port Jackson, New South Wales to the Coromandel coastline of eastern India. This posting was in accordance with a Regiments routine of bi-annual posting, and the foot soldiers immediately set out upon an arduous foot march to the central India city of , Bellary, officially Ballari, in the eponymous Bellari district and a major city in the state of Karnataka, India.
Accordingly two years later the Regiment marched across the Deccan Plateau to Kannur - Cannanore - (British) in the State of Kerala, on the west coast of India and the Arabian Sea. This amounts to having then marched on a Northerly to Southern route across the breadth of Southern India (of the order of 1500km). When the British occupied this part of the East Indies, the preferred location was Madras and Cochin as their major stations and port cities.
Mary Ann Marlow was born on 10 January 1826, in Cannanore, Kerala, India.
Mary was the first born child and eldest daughter Thomas Marlow [i] a Drum major with the 46th. Regiment and Ann Carver (widow Bradfute aka Broadfoot). Mary Ann, our (ggg'parents) directly related family member, born and raised for more than seven years military cantonments in India, supported on the strength of the British Regiment. Mary Ann was baptised and christened[ii] on 26th./28th January 1826. Her surname and that of her father, is recorded as Marlowe or Marlow, sometimes Mahler or Marler, the latter being the name of her father, as recorded with the British army when he was in Australia. When the army went to India in 1817, the records show Thomas Marler as Thomas Marlow which was the same family name assumed by Mary A Marlow.
Kannur Cantonment until 1887, was the British military headquarters on the Malabar Coast to the Arabian Sea; i.e. the west coast of India. Kannur is a city in the northern district of Kerala, South India and under British rule, Kannur was known as “Cannanore Cantonment, situated in Burnassery or Burnshire (the anglicized name)and was the location of military headquarters for the administrative district of the Madras Presidency until 1887. Today names have changed agin as independent India forges it's identity although it remains on the Malabar coast, north of Tellicherry and south of Mangalore).
The Regiment, I assume, conducted the schooling of children; those of a limited number of soldiers with ranks, who were permitted to travel with their wives and to live on the strength of the Regiment. A Drum Major would commonly act as schoolmaster as well as carry out his other duties.
The following documentary evidence has helped to clarify Mary's journey:-
[i] Thomas Marler was born 1798 in Somerset, England."Family Search" records indicate Mary Anne was the daughter of Thomas Marlow and Ann Carver (widow Bradfoot aka Bradfute).Mary Ann Marlow (aka Ritchie and Putland) acknowledged that she was born in the East Indies, on the birth certificate (NSW Birth Registration Transcription Ref. No. 1866/5408) of Ann Putland, daughter by her second marriage. Mary Anne Putland's death certificate confirms her first marriage to William Ritchie.
b) Mary Ann Marlow came to Australia about 1837 from Cork, Ireland. The date of arrival has not been yet confirmed and may have been under the surname of either Marler (Marlow) or her foster parent’s surname Appelbe (aka Appleby).
c) Mary Anne and sibling Thomas were both referenced in the Will of her foster parent - William Paris (4th husband of Ann Carver) - demonstrating the children’s presence in the NSW Richmond district by 1841. Mary Anne was then 15 years old and the Will read: "Also I bequeath to Mary Ann Marlow one black filly rising three years old, name (Nancy). Branded WP."

Transportation- This record is one of the entries in the British convict transportation registers 1787-1867 database compiled by State Library of Queensland from British Home Office (HO) records which are available on microfilm as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project.
Sarah Anne Ritchie (1848-1916) was born 24 August 1848, Richmond, NSW. Thomas Brown, son of Thomas Brown and Rose O'Neill, born at Fish River, NSW, was a bachelor aged 25, a labourer, resident at White Rock.
The marriage certificate for Sarah indicates - a spinster, aged 20, born Richmond, New South Wales and a shepherd's daughter, resident at Lagoon, New South Wales. Thomas Putland's trade had been a shepherd not her father William Richmond, was a shepherd and carrier. This may indicate it was Thomas that had raised Sarah.

Thomas Marler born 1798 appears to be the correct identity. Correction: This was revised because the year of birth was 7 years early than death records showed.; I previously considered him to be Thomas Marlow(e) born about 1791 in the Parish of Thornton, the Town of Thirsk, County York the son of John Marlow and Elizabeth (5' 6 3/4" tall, brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion and by trade or occupation was a weaver. He joined the Royal Scots, 1st Regiment of Foot in January 1809 serving with 2nd Battalion at rank Corporal for 2 years in India until 10th September 1813. The Royal Scots was the oldest infantry regiment in the British Army and the 2nd Battalion moved to India about 1806 and remained until 1826. Thomas left the Regiment on 20th May 1816 and we have no account for the following year.
